Tom Goodwin
Chief Financial Officer
Tom has over 35 years of experience in public accounting and real estate. Prior to founding Goodwin Partners LLP in 2004, his experience included several years as a partner with the Kenneth Leventhal Real Estate Group of Ernst & Young LLP, a “Big Four” public accounting firm. During his public accounting career, which included a period as senior tax manager at Arthur Andersen, he has specialized in providing high level value added services to clients in the Real Estate and Venture Capital industries, as well as servicing clients in other industries and working with high net worth individuals.
During his public accounting career, Tom has delivered US and international tax services to large and small real estate clients, ranging from REIT’s to Pension Fund investors to large and small real estate owners and developers. Throughout his career, Tom has assisted his real estate clients in using complex transaction structures to defer or avoid tens of millions of dollars in income taxes. Tom served on National Real Estate teams at both Arthur Andersen and Ernst & Young.
In addition to his experience in public accounting, Tom spent several years (1985-1991) at Cabot, Cabot and Forbes, when it was a $2 billion privately owned real estate developer. Tom functioned as Director of Taxes and supervised a staff of 7 people, delivering tax services to the 140+ legal entities in the organization, as well as having responsibility for Human Resources, Payroll and Risk Management.
He also served from 2001-2004 as a Senior Vice-President at Equis Financial Group, where he was responsible for all tax related matters, financial reporting and financing for various projects as well as acquisition and divestiture planning and implementation for the entire organization.
Tom’s role with his current clients includes overseeing the delivery of accounting services to a number of real estate and start up clients, including assisting them with advantageously structuring their equity and debt, assisting certain clients in obtaining financing and sometimes functioning as the CFO in assisting the clients in managing all financial aspects of the their business. He also assists clients with tax planning and structuring of transactions to minimize their overall income and estate taxes.
Tom graduated from Suffolk University in Boston with a BS in Accounting and received his MS in Taxation from Bentley College. He is a CPA in Massachusetts, and a member of the Mass. Society of CPA’s and the AICPA. Over the years, Tom has served the Real Estate Committee of the Mass. Society of CPA’s, the Membership Committee of REFA, and Co-Chairman of the Education Committee (and member of the Executive Board) of the National Association of Industrial and Office Parks (NAIOP). He has also spoken on real estate and income tax matters to various real estate and business groups.
